Anxiety Before Competition
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Racing thoughts before practice or competition. Tightness in your chest or stomach. Trouble sleeping the night before. Overthinking mistakes before they happen. Feeling like your worth depends on your performance.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Performance anxiety can slowly turn the game into survival instead of enjoyment. Over time, athletes may experience burnout, panic attacks, emotional exhaustion, avoidance, or begin tying their identity entirely to results.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Focus on controlling your environment, not the outcome. Slow your breathing. Reduce mental clutter. Talk honestly with someone you trust. Build routines that calm your nervous system before competition instead of feeding pressure.

Fear of Failure
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Constant fear of disappointing others. Feeling like mistakes define you. Avoiding risks because failure feels personal. Perfectionism that never feels satisfied.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Fear of failure can create paralysis over the golf ball, emotional exhaustion, loss of confidence, and eventually make athletes resent the sport they once loved.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
All fear of failure is, is thoughts of past results, or fear of future failure. That's why it's so important to stay in the present. Start separating performance from identity. Failure is information, not identity. Focus on growth, effort, preparation, and perspective instead of perfection. Stay in, and ENJOY the moment.

Burnout
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Mental exhaustion. Loss of motivation. Feeling emotionally numb toward the sport. Dreading practice. Feeling tired no matter how much you rest.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Burnout can lead to depression, isolation, quitting the sport entirely, unhealthy coping habits, or loss of self-worth.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Rest without guilt. Reconnect with why you started. Remember that the game is supposed to be fun. Reduce constant comparison and pressure inputs. Talk openly with someone before emotional exhaustion becomes emotional shutdown. When you start playing or practicing again, do different things (kid-like) to make practice fun agan.

Identity Loss
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Feeling like your sport is the only thing that defines you. Panic after poor performances or injuries. Feeling lost outside athletics.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Identity loss can contribute to anxiety, depression, substance abuse, emotional instability, and fear about the future.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Begin building identity beyond performance. Invest in relationships, hobbies, faith, purpose, learning, and personal growth outside the game. You'll be your happiest on the golf course, when you are your happiest OFF the golf course. Get away from the game for a minute and focus on the things above.

Substance Abuse
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Using alcohol, drugs, gambling, or unhealthy habits to numb pressure, loneliness, stress, or emotional pain.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Coping behaviors can slowly become dependency, isolation, damaged relationships, emotional instability, and serious mental health struggles.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Honesty is strength. Talk to someone early. PLEASE! Find someone who has battled these same demons and found help. It's huge to lean on someone who has been there. Small habits become dangerous when hidden. Isolation is toxic, so lean on friends and family for support. Support works best before crisis happens.

Injury &Recovery
WHAT YOU MAY BE EXPERIENCING
Fear about the future. Frustration. Anger. Feeling forgotten. Loss of confidence and routine.
IF YOU DO NOTHING?
Injury can deeply affect mental health, identity, confidence, and emotional stability if recovery is only treated physically.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Treat recovery as both physical and mental. Stay connected to teammates, friends, and support systems. Ask for help emotionally, not just medically. Be willing to talk about your feelings so they don't build up and multiply.
